About Me

Hello! I'm Rohan Jha, an 11th-grader at Cinco Ranch High School. I've always been passionate about solving problems, a journey that began with my fascination with math in elementary school and my desire to create a lasting impact to serve humanity. The complexity of numbers mesmerized me and serving the community inspired me. I spent weekends practicing to understand the mysteries of mathematics and dreaming about a better world.
In middle school, I participated in math competitions such as AMC 8 & 10 and Mathcounts, which introduced me to problems that demanded creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. These experiences inspired my determination to tackle challenging problems and eventually led me to address real-world issues such as the gender disparity in education.
During my visits to India, I observed a significant gender gap in educational opportunities for young girls. Many girls were unable to pursue schooling and were often forced into early marriage or household chores. This issue deeply disturbed me, inspiring me to conduct scientific research on girls' education. My findings were published in a prestigious international journal namely Oxford Open Economics, and US and Indian media.
I leveraged my girls' education research to create real-world impacts by enhancing infrastructure, increasing the number of teachers, and driving social awareness for education in rural India. This led to the establishment of libraries serving 400+ students, appointment of two additional teachers, and the construction of a new school building. I am actively expanding student engagement in libraries and social awareness through strategic initiatives, including a potential collaboration with Pratham USA.
Furthermore, I've also published research papers on topics such as carbon emissions reduction, data center carbon emissions assessment and mitigation, prediction of S&P 500, and profitability improvement for cyclical businesses in notable journals like Frontiers in Sustainability, Intersect: The Stanford Journal of Science, Technology, and Society, and the American journal of Student Research. These projects further deepended my passion for economics and business while strenghtening my drive to solve complex problems through my interests in mathematics and data science.
Outside of research and academics, I founded the Idea to Impact (Economics) club at Cinco Ranch High School to enhance learning to solve business problems and create social impact, served as a VP for Mu Alpha Theta, am coaching middle school students for math competitions, and enjoy sports and serving humanity.

Research on Education, Sustainability, and Business
My research focuses on critical areas impacting humanity such as education in the developing world, sustainability, and business topics through data analytics, surveys, and interviews under the guidance of Prof. Raghunath Singh Rao of University of Texas (UT) at Austin, Prof. Priyanka Tripathi of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna, India, and Prof. Mazhar Islam of Loyola University New Orleans. My findings have been published in several international journals and conferences.

- Collected students' participation and performance data from 2004 to 2024 in the 10th-grade examination.
- Analyzed the data using analytics and econometric models to understand the drivers for the educational transformation and identified how to improve the performance further.
- Supported recommendations with a survey of 500+ participants across students, teachers, and parents, and select interviews.
- Had coverage in Indian media to motivate the students and increase social awareness.
- Also, accepted for the 47th INFORMS Society for Marketing Science (ISMS) Marketing Science conference to be held in Washington DC in June 2025 with the paper title "Driving Change: How Incentives Transformed Girls’ Education in Bihar, India".
Sustainability
2. Forecasting US data center CO2 emissions using AI models: emissions reduction strategies and policy recommendations

- Estimated CO2 emissions of exponentially rising data centers for AI, cloud computing, and cryptocurrency using several AI models.
- Assessed the impact of power demand and power mix variability on CO2 emissions from data centers.
- Identified resolution opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions.
- Also, accepted for International Conference on Sustainability, Environment, and Social Transition in Economics and Finance conference, held in Paris, France in December 2024.
3. Assessment of US emissions targets and path forward using statistical modeling

- Analyzed Biden administration's goal for a 50-52% reduction in greenhouse gases compared to 2005 by 2030 and carbon-free electricity by 2035.
- Developed regression equations for CO2 emissions overall and also for power sector.
- Found that the US is not on track to meet either of these two goals.
- Identified how the US could meet these goals by using more renewable resources and electric vehicles, increasing the fuel efficiency of cars, and other.
Business
4. Maximize profitability and reduce downside risks using statistical models

- Gathered data on gasoline price and oil prices, and drivers of those prices with a 6-month lag.
- Found a regression equation to predict the oil and gas prices with ~5% error to maximize profitability for refineries.
- Identified profitability drivers to improve using statistical models and commercial levers such as index-based contracts.
5. Identification of key impacting sectors to drive S&P 500 behavior using statistical modeling

- Gathered data for S&P 500 and all eleven sectors for the last 20 years.
- Developed a regression equation to predicts S&P 500 using key sector data in advance.
- Identified key sectors impacting the S&P 500 behavior using colinearity.
- Found an equation to predict the prices with ~2% error which can help in understanding S&P 500 behavior using three key sectors technology, financials, and energy.

We established libraries in two schools: Middle School Fulbari and Primary School Nai Tola Fulbari, located in a rural Indian village namely Fulbari in the district of Araria. The aim is to foster curiosity, expand knowledge, and create new opportunities for students. These libraries house around 800 books covering literature, motivation, health, and foundational course materials with further addition of books, based on student input. They will benefit over 400 students and have been widely featured in local media, helping to raise social awareness.

Rohan and Rishabh with the District Education Officer are working to establish a new building and appoint two additional teachers at Primary School Nai Tola, Fulbari.
During our visit to Nai Tola School in Fulbari, we (Rohan and Rishabh) were shocked by its conditions—there was no school building, and the students were visibly uncomfortable. Determined to bring change, we raised the issue with the District Magistrate, who has now committed to providing a building by the end of 2025.
View Progress & ImpactFurthermore, we found that just two teachers were responsible for educating 160 students across multiple grades. Acknowledging the immense challenge this posed for both teachers and students, we brought attention to the issue. As a result, plans are now underway to expand the teaching staff to four, ensuring improved educational support for the students.

We actively promoted social awareness about the disparities in girls' education. By organizing a large gathering with the villagers, we highlighted the importance of accessible education for all. As discussed in our papers, raising awareness about girls' education is one of the most effective ways to drive societal progress. Furthermore, our efforts were featured in multiple newspapers, amplifying our initiatives and encouraging others to contribute to improving education.
